An author/illustrator is a rare creature: an artist who specializes in enhancing or elucidating concepts by providing a visual representation that corresponds to the content of the associated text or idea, both of which they have created themselves. We have managed to find a few and tamed them from the wild to come and speak at our Words and Pictures Workshop for aspiring author/illustrators of children’s books.

The illustration in a picture book is often intended to clarify complicated concepts or objects that are difficult to describe textually, which is the reason illustrations are of critical importance in children’s fiction, but what happens when you are the one who is writing the text as well? How do you find the balance, without being one or the other?

10.30 to 11.00: Dr Sue Pillans will share a storyboard of her journey to publication, with an amazing example of how following your passion for art can pay off in the end.

Giuseppe Poli Author Mentor

11.00 to 12.00: Author/Illustrator Giuseppie Poli will share his own pathway to publication and his quest for perfecting his own unique style.

Emma Middleton Author Mentor

12.30 to 1.00: Author/Illustrator Emma Middleton will talk about how she went from ballet slippers to paint and pens and how her tenacious spirit led to her success.

1.00 to 1.30 Artist, Writer and Illustrator Lauren E Tarrant joins our guest speakers in an open mic session where our industry professionals can give you feedback on a project that you would like to share with the group and answer any questions you have about the publication process.

Tea and Coffee provided. A portion from the price of your workshop fee will be donated by Share Your Story Australia to enable a Dalit girl or young woman aged between 13 to 19 years old access to literacy education. These girls, who come from the poorest families, have been taken out of the education system to help work on the land, or in other ways earn money for their family. This will enhance their lives through teaching them to read and write. Thank you for your support.
